Auditions are currently on a case-by case basis. We are still accepting players!! Email us at email@example.com for more details.
The purpose of the audition is to place each student in the ensemble where he or she will be the best fit. This is NOT an audition for RYS (you are already in!), nor is it a seating audition. Each conductor will make seating decisions for their ensemble later in the season.
Preparing for the audition: Find the audition material for your instrument below and print it off. It should be 2 pages long, and contain 4 different excerpts. Begin preparing excerpt #1, following as many markings (bowings, fingerings, dynamics, etc.) as you can. If you feel able to prepare excerpt #2, continue to do so. Prepare as many of the 4 excerpts as you feel comfortable playing. It is NOT necessary to play all the excerpts at the audition!! The judge will ask you which excerpts you prepared, and you will only be asked to play those.
In addition to the prepared excerpts, the judge may ask you to play one or two scales, or possibly sight-read. Prepare a few scales, in case you are asked for them. You may choose your own scales, your own tempo, your own rhythm/articulation, and the number of octaves you feel you can play well. If you know minor scales, prepare one of those as well (whatever variation of the minor scale you want). Again, the judge will ask you if you have prepared scales and which scale(s) you would like to play. You will not be asked to play any scales you have not prepared. The entire audition will take less than 10 minutes.
Attending the Audition: When you arrive, there will be a check-in area where you will be assigned a number for audition during that session. When your number is called, you will be directed to the audition area.
Registration materials and payment information will be available to parents during each session. RYS Board members will be on hand to answer questions. A completed registration form and full payment for each student are due no later than the your first rehearsal.
